沖縄科学技術大学院大学での作品除幕式

沖縄科学技術大学院大学（OIST）の最新の建物、第５研究棟に、私の作品「処暑」が設置されました。

2023年5月20日、OISTの代理学長アルブレヒト・ワグナー氏、新学長のカリン・マルキデス博士をはじめとするOISTの皆さまが、素敵な除幕式を開催してくださいました。

ノーベル賞を受賞された科学者も連なる理事会のメンバーの方々にもお集まりいただき、以下のような話をさせていただきました。

以下、菊田一朗スピーチ：

ご列席の皆さま、そしてこのような素敵な会を開いてくださることにご尽力くださったOISTの皆さま、
作品寄贈にあたってご協力くださったアルブレヒト・ワグナー臨時学長、そして夫人のマルティーヌ・ワグナー氏にこの場を借りて心から感謝申し上げます。

私の作品にとって、墨によるグラデーション、もしくは陰影はとても大切な要素となります。
私たちは、自然の風景の中に、たくさんの陰影を認めることがあります。

身近なものは山々にかかる霧でしょう。
私たちが視覚によって認識できる山々は、それを覆う霧の中へと消えていきます。
霧に覆われてしまえば、私たちはもう山々を認知することはありません。
陰影は、私たちが認知できるものと認知できないものの境界を表現しているのです。
東洋では、認知できない広大な世界に思いを馳せる伝統がありました。禅のように。
私たちは、自分の思考や感情を自覚したり、目や耳などの器官で情報を得たり
その一方で、その外に存在する世界（全体性）を直感により感じ取る能力も兼ね備えています。
認知できるものも、できないものも、すべてはダイナミックに変化をし続けています。
山々にかかっては消える霧のように。
この作品では、沖縄島北部、山原と呼ばれる地域の自然を描きました。
ヤンバルクイナやクワズイモといった、私たちが普段、独立したものとして捉えている生命達です。
しかし、全体性の中では、すべては境界がないということを思い出してください。
私たちの独立した生命は、生まれては消えていくように見えていても、すべては自然の動的な営みの中に形を変え、そして引き継がれていくのです。
各々は変化しつつも、全体としての存在は一貫して保ち続けます。
私はそのような自然観を、モノクロームとグラデーションで表現しました。この度、未知なる世界を探求し続ける科学者の皆様に、敬意を持ってこの作品を捧げたいと思います。
OISTの皆さまのさらなるご活躍を心よりお祈り申し上げます。

Dear distinguished gutes, I would like to express my gratitude for your presence here today. I would also like to express my appreciation to the staff of OIST for their extraordinary efforts in organising this event and to Acting President Dr. Albrecht Wagner and his wife Martine Wagner for their friendship and cooperation in donating the work.
Let me explain a little about my work.
The gradation or shading of ink is a very important element in my art.
When we observe natural landscapes, we often notice numerous shades. An excellent example of this is the fog that covers mountains and makes them disappear from view. The shadows represent the boundary between what is visible and what is not.
In the East there is a long tradition of contemplating the vast world of the unknowable. Like Zen.
While we are aware of our thoughts, feelings and the information we receive through our senses, we also have the ability to intuitively sense the world beyond them, the ‘wholeness’ that exists outside of ourselves. Everything, whether recognizable or not, is in a constant state of dynamic change, like the fog that covers the mountains and then dissipates.
In this work I depicted nature in the northern part of the island of Okinawa, in an area known as Yambaru. These are the lives that we usually perceive as independent, such as the Okinawa rail and the kuwazuimo potato. But remember that in wholeness everything has no boundaries. Our independent lives may seem to come and go, but they all take shape and are passed on in the dynamics of nature.
Everything changes, but continues to exist as a whole.
I have expressed this view of nature through monochrome and gradient.
I would like to dedicate this work with respect to all scientists at OIST who continue to explore the unknown.
