The Spirit of Black Ink Painting

How  can I describe the place in which I paint?

It is where we have come from, where we are now, and where we will go.

It is a place of tranquility and peace of mind.

There are no divisions, everyone and everything are one.

You and me, nature and human beings, stones and trees, birds and water are all one.

An individual’s life is transient

The birds and flowers I draw in ink are part of something greater.

To live as part of something greater than oneself is at the heart of painting with black ink.

Sumi Paintings as the Visualization of Meditation

Ichiro Kikuta

We all want to have a better life.

There are two main ways of making our lives “better.”

One is to change the environment we are in. The other is to change our mindsets.

For example, when you have the desire to become rich,

one way to satisfy yourself is to become rich.

On the other hand, you could also satisfy yourself by changing

your mindset to think that all you need is a moderate amount of money.

In the East, meditation has been used since ancient times

as a way to obtain peace of mind.

Through meditation, people have been achieving a “better life”

by changing their mindsets rather than by changing their environments.

How can you bring yourself to a state of meditation?

Each individual may have his/her way which suits his/her personality.

Zen meditation and yoga are well known,

but for me it is difficult to sit down quietly with my eyes closed for long periods of time.

I struggled to bring myself to a state of meditation.

However, when I stood in front of fine sumi paintings

painted by Muqi from China and Sotatsu from Japan,

I immediately calmed down and experienced a state of meditation.

It surprised me.

When a person paints a piece by looking deep inside him/herself,

the piece has the power to influence the minds of the viewer.

It is very interesting that one painting can transcend time

and space and connect people’s minds.

My ambition is to paint pieces which give peace of mind to those who see them.
